Introduction

Some tram systems advertise their depot workings and enable one to ascertain the regular use by passenger-carrying services of junctions or sections of line that do not otherwise see public service. This occasional series lists such services that have come to notice. While the data for each system is current at the date stated, it is not the intention to endeavour to keep every entry up to date at every service change - the listing serves as a guide for travellers as to the sort of services they can look out for, enabling them to check current published timetable material at their time of travel.

To assist in tracing services, the route and/or timetable number for each journey is shown in parentheses, e.g. (1). Days of operation are in English notation (respectively: Su, M, T, W, Th, F, S) - plus "O" for only, "X" for excepted. Su (Sundays) usually includes public holidays in mainland Europe - but check locally.

Listings for other systems throughout the world - in the same format as shown below (please include date of timetable validity) - will always be welcomed.

Although various depot workings use lines and curves not in public service, none is advertised in the current timetables. Note, however:

  • route 82 - of which the section between Gare de l'Ouest / Weststation and Porte de Ninove / Ninoofsepoort is not duplicated by other routes - runs only Mondays to Fridays (not evenings)
  • between Gare du Midi / Zuidstation and Bara route 56 (both directions) and 83 (towards Midi/Zuid) use the surface level route but only route 83 (from Midi/Zuid) uses the sub-surface route and the ramp at Bara.

Eira Sairaala - Eira Telakkakatu loop

  • Route 1A (note A in timetable) Mondays to Fridays approx every 10 minutes 05:44 to 08:49 and 14:20 to 17:38 from Käpylä Pohjoianaukio, returning at 06:06 to 09:27 and 14:58 to 18:15 from Eira Telakkakatu.

Kauppatori: west to north curve

  • Used by route 1 Mondays to Fridays starting from Kauppatori approx every 20 minutes 09:48 to 14:55. Also used by the Spårakoff pub tram (see below). Also note that there is an anti-clockwise one-way system between Senaatintori and Kauppatori used by trams 1/1A/3B/3T.

Kauppiaankatu - Katajanokan terminaali loop

  • Used by route 4T with limited service for three periods daily (ca. 10:00 to 11:00 SuO/12:00 SuX, 15:30 SuO/16:00 SuX to 17:00, 19:00 SuO to 20:00 SuO and 20:00 SuX to 21:00 SuX) as advertised with note T in timetable, for connections with vessel sailings.

Vallila - Koskelan halliin (Koskela tram depot)

The depot is at the end of a branch about 1.5 km long off the north end of routes 6 and 8. Trams coming off service to Koskelan halliin show a special yellow destination blind and route letter H, and are shown by note k in timetables for routes 1, 1A, 3B (as from Olympialaituri), 3T (as from Eläintarha), 6 (none at present), 7A (as from Pasila station), 7B (as from Senaatinori) and 8. The journeys are mainly at the end of the day's service, but with additional journeys as the peak services wind down. Trams are not advertised in passenger service from the depot.

Trams from Käpylä Pohjolanaukio and Pasila make a left turn from Mäkelänkatu into Sturenkatu. Those from Eira Telakkakatu (when operated) run along Sturenkatu, crossing over Mäkelänkatu.

Sörnäinen south - west curve, between Hämeentie and Helsingegatan

Temporarily in use from January 2008 to 9 August 2008 by routes 3B and 3T (apart from journeys to Koskelan halliin with note k in timetable) and the Spårakoff pub tram (see below) because of closure for engineering work of line north from Hakaniemi via Kallio Berghäll.

Spårakoff Pub Tram

The Spårakoff Pub Tram operates an anti-clockwise circuit from Mikonkatu (close to the main railway station, on its east side) via Linnanmäki, Ooperatalo, Ylioppilastalo and Kauppatori, during the course of which it uses the following lines which have no other passenger service:

  • North to east curve out of Mikonkatu
  • East to south curve from Nordenskiödinkatu to Mannerheimintie at Oopera
  • East to south curve from Liisankatu to Kaisaniemenkatu at Kaisaniemi
  • Loop off Kaisaniemenkatu via south to west curve into Vilhonkatu to return to Mikonkatu

In 2008 the pub tram ran Tuesdays to Saturdays between 20 May and 30 August, departing Mikonkatu at 14:00, 15:00, 17:00, 18:00, 19:00 & 20:00. Departure was earlier if the tram was full. A different route operated during the engineering works from 30 June to 6 July 2008.

France

Bassin à Flots - Rue Achard

Route B (Claveau) crosses a lock leading from the Garonne into the port basins. To do so there are road plus tram swing bridges at each end - that at the river end (Quai de Bacalan) carries the main double tram track. The bridge the basin end has single tram track, reached by single track along the Quai du Sènègal on one side of the lock and the Quai du Maroc on the other; this is the subsidiary route, normally used only when the double track direct route is blocked by a shipping movement. However, the double track bridge is currently (September 2009) blocked by semi-permanent barriers to road and tram traffic (swung open for shipping) so all tram movements are via the single track route and bridge. This also accounts for the more limited frequency of service north of Bassins à Flot. There are two single track connecting curves, linking routes A, B and C in the area of Porte de Bourgogne and Quinconces. Although depot workings may use the curves, none is advertised in the above timetable.

Seasonal Sunday historic tram routes operate only on dates advertised: route 15 on second Sunday of month, route 16 on fourth Sunday of month.

Route 15 departs Hauptbahnhof (outside Mercure hotel) at 10:30, 14:00, 15:30.

Route 16 departs Hauptbahnhof (outside Mercure hotel) every 30 minutes from 10:30 to 16:00.

Friedhof terminus

  • The terminus of Route 1 at Friedhof does not have a turning circle, therefore all single ended trams [that is, all services at weekends] change direction on departure by reversing in passenger service via a triangle at the entrance to the adjacent Depot.

Stuttgart: VVS

Neckar Park (Stadion)

  • Neckar Park (Stadion) is served by a branch off routes U1 and U2 between Stuttgart city centre and Bad Canstatt. Trams run to the stadium in connection with football matches and other special events. U11 runs from the city centre via the south curve onto the branch.   • Route 4 between 06.00 to 19.00 SSuX, 09.00 - 16.00 SO; at all other times services double run to, and via a complete loop at the Hauptbahnhof and serve the Juliuspromenade stop in both directions.

Madrider Ring North to South

  • Route 5 is diverted via the north to west curve to additionally serve the route 3 terminus at Hechelhof Athener Ring out of working hours, therefore the direct north - south line is only used between 05.30 and 19.30 SSuX and 08.30 and 16.30 on Saturdays.

Although various depot workings use lines and curves not in public service, none is advertised in the current timetables. On Koninginnedag (celebration of the Queen's birthday, a public holiday, 30 April) there are no trams in the inner area of the city, so amended and special services operate, including the use of curves not otherwise regularly used in public service. Details obtainable locally in April.

Although various depot workings use lines and curves not in public service, none is advertised in the current timetables. Note, however, that route 10 - portions of which are not duplicated by other routes - runs only Mondays to Fridays peak hours (until ca.09:00 and from ca.15:00 to ca.19:00).
