This line is used by trains between Erfurt Hbf and Schweinfurt Hbf, to avoid reversal at Meiningen. These run every two hours.
This north to east curve enables trains to run directly between Bad Langensalza and Neudietendorf without needing to reverse at Gotha. Trains run every two hours between Göttingen and Erfurt, normally reversing at Gotha.  From 19 April until 16 June these trains omit the Gotha stop and use the east curve instead.

Just west of Grimmenthal station, the Meiningen – Themar line crosses over the Schweinfurt – Suhl line, each route having its own platforms at Grimmenthal. To enable through running between Meiningen and Suhl, there are connecting spurs at both west and east ends of the station. In general, the western spur is used by trains from Meiningen to Zella-Mehlis or Erfurt whereas those from Erfurt or Zella-Mehlis to Meiningen use the eastern spur.
This west to south curve enables trains to run directly between Großheringen and Jena
