It is not possible for trains to run direct between Schweinfurt and Themar, but connecting spurs at the west and east ends of the station enable through running between Meiningen and Suhl. Just west of Grimmenthal station, the Meiningen – Themar line crosses over the Schweinfurt – Suhl line, each route having its own platforms at Grimmenthal. To enable through running between Meiningen and Suhl, there are connecting spurs at both west and east ends of the station. In general, the western spur is used by trains from Meiningen to Zella-Mehlis or Erfurt and those from Erfurt or Zella-Mehlis to Meiningen use the eastern spur.
This line, which avoids Weimar Hbf to the north, is used by ''RE'' services if there is engineering work blocking Weimar Hbf. It was last used in September 2019.
