Italy (Sardegna) - Lines with Obscure or Sparse passenger services

Jump to navigationJump to search

This list is based on the timetable in force until 12 December 2020. Although dated as 'from 14 June 2020' the timetable has been updated and reissued several times since then. Users are recommended to check the Trenitalia website to ensure they are using the latest version.

Table numbers quoted here are from In Treno Tutt'Italia, the official Trenitalia timetable. Standard abbreviations are explained in General Information. Map references relate to the European Railway Atlas Regional Series and, in italic, to the Schweers+Wall Atlante ferroviario d’Italia e Slovenia.

A large number of local trains, especially in Northern Italy, and some long-distance trains, are shown in In Treno Tutt'Italia as not running after various dates in August and September 2020. If correct this would leave some areas, particularly Lombardia, with a very sparse service. The compilers anticipate a further timetable revision correcting this, so have not shown the trains concerned as 'dated' in the listings below. However, users are advised to check schedules carefully.

Two useful symbols exist which show the booked route for trains not calling at a station: in the middle of the train column, a vertical bar "|" means that the train passes through the station without stopping, whereas a dot "." means that the train does not pass through that station but instead takes a different route.

Ferrovie della Sardegna obscure services

Limited services, marketed as Il Trenino Verde della Sardegna, normally operate over the following Ferrovie della Sardegna lines during the summer. There are also occasional public excursions at other times. Details are shown on website, but it should be noted that these may vary in practice, particularly if there are insufficient advance bookings. It is also possible to charter trains.

Proposals to close all lines which do not have year-round passenger traffic have been dropped in favour of plans to rehabilitate them. Traffic was suspended from 24 June 2016 between Laconi and Sorgono and between Seui and Arbatax, because of the poor condition of some bridges. The lines to Sorgono and between Gairo and Arbatax re-opened for the 2017 season, but Seui to Gairo remained closed.

Services in 2018 were cut back somewhat and it was announced that there will only be a limited service on one line, thought to be Palau to Tempio, in 2019. This was said to be because of renovation work taking place on other lines.

No timetable was available by the start of the normal operating season in mid-June and there have been reports of legal difficulties preventing any service being operated.

The timetable for 2018 is as entered below, but is no guide as to what service, if any, may operate in 2020.

Palau - Tempio

(113C1-113A3) IT18/172

This is the 2018 Timetable as the website section for this line states no trains operated in 2019 but are planned for 2020.

D MWFO 09:00 Palau - Tempio
D TWFSuO 16:00 Tempio - Palau

Bosa Marina - Sindia

(114B3-114C3) IT18/173

This is the 2018 Timetable as by November 2019 the website section for this line states trains did not operate between Macomer and Sindia in 2019 but are planned for 2020.

D SO 15:30 Bosa Marina - Sindia

Mandas - Laconi

(117A3-117A2) IT18/174

These are the 2018 timings as the website section for this line states Laconi to Sorgono was closed in 2019 but a service is planned in 2020

D SuO 09:00 Mandas - Laconi
D SuO 17:00 Laconi - Mandas

Mandas - Sadali

(117A3-117B2) IT18/175

As at November 2019 the website implies a service ran 14km beyond Sadali to Seui but there are no timings. These are what ran in 2018 and the section of the website for this section states services are planned to resume right through to Arbatax in 2020

D MTO 09:00 Mandas - Sadali
D MTO 16:30 Sadali - Mandas

Arbatax - Gairo

(117D1-117C2) IT18/176

Confusingly the section of the website for this service claims Gairo to Mandas was closed in 2019 suggesting no service on this nor IT18/175 but suggesting there should be a service in 2020

D ThFSSuO 08:00 Arbatax - Gairo
D ThFSSuO 16:30 Gairo - Arbatax

There were no passenger trains over the following Ferrovie della Sardegna lines in 2018.

Sassari - Tempio

Laconi - Sorgono

Sadali - Gairo
