Introduction

WARNING

Because of a shortage of timetable planners at Trafikverket and the introduction of a new system called MPK, there are considerable delays in scheduling train paths. The published PDF timetables will therefore not be updated with further information for the 2023 (T23) timetable. Trafikverket will not issue the complete timetable all at once, but will update it continually during the year.

To find current traffic information, check your trip on a journey planner e.g. www.resrobot.se - Click "Reseplanerare" and click the British flag (top right hand corner). If the plan does not contain travel with Flixtrain or MTRX www.sj.se/enis easier to use.

The non-electrified DMU-operated lines have a higher percentage of replacement bus operation than electrified lines. The worst line is Linköping – Västervik, where in average the full train service runs on only one day in three. Check your departure station at Trafikverket before departure to ensure it is a train and not a bus.

This list is based on the timetable dated from 11 December 2022 – 9 December 2023 (Graphical timetable TRV T23) and the public timetables (available from resrobot.se during the validity of the graphical timetable) unless otherwise shown. It is recommended that the instructions in Sweden - General Information are followed for details on how to obtain relevant timetables. Standard abbreviations used are explained in General Information. document.

Map references for each route entry are given in parentheses ( ). References prefixed "ERA-E" refer to the European Railway Atlas (All-Europe Edition) by M.G. Ball. Template:Map Refs ERA-R-NO-SE-FI-DK

Obscure services

Stockholm Syd Flemingsberg – Järna (Järna Jn.)

[60/61/80/81/114/115] (ERA-E 1A4 OR &A1; ERA-R 9B2 or 11A1-11A2) SE23/1

Main line trains use the new (1995) Grödinge line, while local services use the former main line between these points. Trains for the Eskilstuna line also use the Grödinge line, between Stockholm and Södertälje Syd.

Mora (Morastrand) – Oxberg

(ERA-E 5B3-C3; ERA-R 8C4) SE23/2

This line has no regular passenger service but in recent years a special train has run between Mora and Oxberg in conjunction with a skiing event (see Vasaloppet or Snälltåget) on or near the last weekend in February. In 2023 no train to Oxberg is mentioned on the Vasaloppet homepage. Note this train is open only to participants in this ladies-only skiing event.

Gävle Central – Gävle Järnvägsmuseet

(ERA-E 6A2, not shown; ERA-R 9B3, not shown) SE23/3

A short electrified branch provides access to the railway museum. Working involves reversal at Gävle C (or use of the freight only Gävle C avoiding line) for trains from the south, then a shunt move to/from the museum. When specials from Stockholm and Uppsala operate, normally on one or two weekends in the autumn, details should be available on the Museum website when known. Look for headline "Årgångståget". The date for reopening of the museum is currently not known, but work is now progressing and plans for a spring 2024 re-opening have been mentioned in the magazine of the Friends of the Swedish NRM.

Järna – Norrköping (Åby)

[80/81] (ERA-E 1A4 or 5A1 and 5C1; ERA-R 9A1-9B1) SE23/4

Trains between Stockholm and Norrköping with no booked stops between Södertälje Syd and Norrköping usually run via Katrineholm. This is faster than the shorter route through Nyköping and is also double track throughout.

Grängesberg – Ställdalen (via Silverhöjden)

[53A] (ERA-E 5C2; ERA-R 9A2-9A3) SE23/5

The former TGOJ line, which parallels the normal ex-BJ line, is available as an extended passing loop. It still has CTC, but the maximum speed is reduced. It can be used to avoid delays when crossing another train, subject to punctual running of both trains. Routing may be altered for operational convenience. With the new Trafikverket project MPK it is from December 2022 no longer possible to see what route a train is set to use here, unless you have a login to the Trafikverket MPK portal. The graphical timetable available to all are based on the path requests, and virtually all trains are visble on both routes. It has been possible to obtain a printout of the trains set to use this route as far as known 10 January 2023. Trains operating only later in 2023 are not all set yet and may be added later. In 2023 there are more variations than ever because of infrastructure work in the Örebro area and south of Hallsberg. The PDF for table 53A is 29 pages, which makes it impossible to fully combine table 53A and the printout for all trains.

This list contains trains visible in the printout as routed via Silverhöjden and existing in table 53A. Please look in table 53A for days of operation and exceptions. A train may not use this line everyday it operates. TÅGAB trains are only listed if they exist both in the printout and in the timetable available from the TÅGAB homepage . Please do not use table 75, it is not reliable.

And as always, verify your plan using a journey planner

The table here shows the most likely (but not guaranteed) trains to use this route.

D{1,2} 8163 [Gävle C / Borlänge C – ] 06:29 Grängesberg – Ställdalen [ – Motala / Mjölby]
D{1,3} 8177 [Gävle C – ] 18:34 Grängesberg – Ställdalen [ – Mjölby / Motala / Hallsberg / Frövi]
D{1} 8179 [Gävle C – ] 20:54 Grängesberg – Ställdalen [ – Hallsberg / Frövi ]
D{1} 8168 [Mjölby / Motala / Norrköping C / Hallsberg / Frövi – ] 11:04 Ställdalen – Grängesberg [ – Gävle C]
D{1} 8182 [Mjölby – ] 22:50 Ställdalen – Grängesberg [ – Borlänge C]

Notes:
{1}: See public timetable 53A for dates and exceptions. Please observe timetable validity days (top left corner).
{2}: Possibly using this route only when starting from Borlänge.
{3}: Departs from Grängesberg 18:31 instead of 18:34 13 and 14 May 2023, and has a shorter travel time to Ställdalen. Hence it can be suspected that the Silverhöjden route is not used.

Vännäs - Umeå (including north and south chords at Vännäs)

[35,40] (ERA-E 6B5; ERA-R 4B3-4C3) SE23/6

The north chord is used by night trains between Boden and the south seen in public timetable 40 calling at Umeå C, and trains not calling at Vännäs in table 35. Table 35 trains calling at Vännäs reverse here and use the south chord.

Please note: Table 35 is already outdated. The last day for a DMU-operated train Hällnäs - Lycksele was 9 December 2022. There are still Norrtåg EMU-operated trains between Hällnäs and Umeå, which have been given new numbers even if this may not be shown in the Norrtåg timetable. See Norrtåg timetable for information on operating days and exceptions, and which Norrtåg trains use the North chord (shown as not calling at Vännäs).

Vännäs – Vindeln (Vännäs north Jn)

[35,40] (ERA-E 6B5; ERA-R 4B3) SE23/7

This section of the main line allows direct running between Boden and the south. It is used by trains in timetable 35 calling at Vännäs, but not trains to/from Umeå terminating in or starting from Vännäs. However, it can also be used by a night train not calling at Umeå C, when rerouted due to infrastructure work.

Nyköping Södra/Jönåker/Stigtomta/Vrena – Oxelösund

(ERA-E 5C1; ERA-R 9B1) SE23/8

On one Saturday early in May each normal year (provisional date for 2023 is 13 May), Grängesbergsbanornas Järnvägsmuseum (GBBJ), now in co-operation with Föreningen Sörmlands Veteranjärnväg (FSVJ), can be expected to run a special veteran train shuttle service for a street fair at Oxelösund ("Oxelösund marknad"). Visit the www.gbbj.nu or www.fsvj.se websites, or Visit Oxelösund nearer the time for details. Note: Nyköping Södra is almost opposite the bus station. In addition an EMU is expected to operate Oxelösund - Nyköping Södra a few dates not yet known, see FSVJ nearer the summer.

In conjunction with this, some empty stock is usually moved from Grängesberg museum on the Friday and returns on the Sunday, using the following freight lines: Lindesberg (Frövi north jn.) – Valskog (Jädersbruk jn.), Mellösa (Flens övre jn.) – Nyköping – Oxelösund and the larger part of, but not the full route SE23/5. GBBJ have been prepared to carry passengers by prior arrangement - contact the Society well in advance, using this e-mail address.

Bollnäs (Ovansjö) – Bräcke (Moradal) (via Ångebyn)

[20/42] (ERA-E 5C4; ERA-R 4A1) SE23/9

A freight line, which is a short-cut just west of Ånge bypassing Ånge and Ånge yard. It is normally used by trains not calling at Ånge, by freight and some Night trains.

Hallsberg – Hallsberg Yard – Skymossen Jn (– Motala – Mjölby)

[53A] (ERA-E 5C1; ERA-R 9A1) SE23/10

All passenger trains except one northbound are currently booked to use the eastern route and not via the yard. Infrastructure work (double-tracking from Hallsberg yard towards the south) is ongoing. When the double-tracking of this section is completed (estimated at 2025-2026), the eastern route will close. Trains using the eastern route are likely to arrive at or depart from platform 1 in Hallsberg.

Uddevalla – Öxnered avoiding line – Trollhättan – Göteborg C

[130,130B] (ERA-E 5A1; ERA-R 12B5) SE23/13

Trains using the Öxnered avoiding line, Uddevalla - Öxnered West Jn - Öxnered South Jn - Trollhättan - Göteborg C. Trains in public timetable 130 shown as calling only at Trollhättan and Gamlestaden are using this chord. If trains start from and terminate at Gamlestaden instead of Göteborg you are recommended to use other public transport (tram) between these stops. There is much infrastructure work ongoing in Göteborg. Between 14 April and 9 December 2023, Uddevalla - Stenungsund is to be closed for infrastructure work. All trains between Uddevalla and Göteborg will be routed via this chord.

Mariefred – Mariefreds Ångbåtsstation (Östra Södermanlands Järnväg)

(ERA-E 6A1 not shown; ERA-R 9B2 not shown) SE23/14

This is a short extension of the 600mm gauge tourist line from the main station in Mariefred to the jetty used by the steamship from Stockholm. On certain days one train continues to and starts from Mariefreds Ångbåtsstation.

D P11 13:36 Mariefreds Ångbåtsstation - Mariefred [ - Läggesta nedre]

See ÖSlJ Homepage for dates of operation. Operates on yellow days. Note that the train does not run to Mariefreds Ångbåtsstation every day that the steamship operates. See ÖSlJ Homepage at least partly in English.

[Malmö C –] Mölndal – Olskroken [– Mora]

(ERA-E 8A5; ERA-R 13C1) SE23/15

The Göteborg C avoiding line is closed for infrastructure work, construction of the West Link . Snälltåget (Transdev) operates winter sport (Vasaloppet) specials which cannot use this spur, and are instead in 2023 routed via Göteborg C station, where the train calls and the locomotive runs round. When Snälltåget trains Stockholm C - Malmö C have been rerouted via Göteborg C (during infrastructure work on the normal route), it has also happened that the train has been routed to Göteborg Kville yard, and reversed into Göteborg C (no run-round necessary). A date for the re-opening of this spur is not known. The preliminary year for the completion of the West Link is 2026.

[Malmö C/Göteborg C –] Storvik – Ockelbo [– Duved/Umeå]

[20](ERA-E 5C2-3; ERA-R 9A3-A4) SE23/16

D{3} FO 3904 [Malmö C –] 21:32 Hässleholm – Östersund C [– Duved]

Notes: {1}: See public timetable 20 for information on operating days and exceptions. Always verify your journey in a journey planner.
{2}: Error in table 20: Page 2 should be before page 1. Southbound book train 71 when starting from Duved – Ånge and train 77 when starting from Umeå – Härnösand. Depending on what the stop before (Northbound) or after (Soutbound) Sundsvall is, the train is routed differently south of Sundsvall, and if the stop is Hallsberg, the train is routed via Stockholm and not using this route!
{3}: See public timetable 20 or the Snälltåget website for information on operating days and exceptions. The latter is more reliable.

[40](ERA-E 5C5, 6AB5; ERA-R 4BC3,4AB2,4A1) SE23/19

If there is major infrastructure work between Gävle C and Umeå C, the night trains may be rerouted to use the old (now freight only) route between Bräcke and Vännäs.

This may be shown in public timetable 40 as trains with no booked stops between Gävle C and Vännäs/Vindeln/Bastuträsk if the PDF is updated at all. Whether these trains will use the newer direct line or the original alignment through Nyåker is decided by the CTC operator during the actual night. [Borlänge /Gävle – Örebro –] Hallsberg – Norrköping [– Alvesta]

It is again expected to be used for passenger trains while Hallsberg - Motala is closed for infrastructure work (double tracking between Hallsberg and Motala). Trains are rerouted to start/terminate in Norrköping instead of Mjölby. A table 53B may appear closer to the relevant dates (26 June to 13 August 2023). You can try the www.sj.se/en journey planner :

If you find a train with a price, tickets are available and you can use the train. Trafikverket is very late in setting the timetables, hopefully the timetables for this route are available late May.

[Göteborg] – Örebro/Västerås/Hallsberg – Kilafors – Söderhamn – Sundsvall – [Umeå / Östersund – Duved]

[20](ERA 9A4) SE23/21

Kilafors - Söderhamn, which lost its passenger service in 1971, and which has been closed some years for substantial upgrade to be able to reroute freight and ease the overload on Gävle - Sundsvall. In 1971 the old line and the old station were used in Söderhamn. A new West to North Söderhamn (West/new station) avoiding line has been built and is used by the night trains. No passenger service except night trains is planned. Exchange of sleepers occurs in Sundsvall during the night, giving both Stockholm and Göteborg direct connection both with Duved and Umeå and v v. There is no passenger service on the West to South chord in Söderhamn.

Notes: {1}: See public timetable 20 or 40 for information on operating days and exceptions.

[Malmö C] – Helsingborg C – Kattarp – Åstorp – Hässleholm – [Stockholm C]

[80](ERA-E 8A3 ERA-R 12C3/15C5) SE23/22

Åstorp - Kattarp has been reinstated for passenger traffic. However it is only used for the Night trains Stockholm - Malmö, and Inter City trains which are intended as relief trains for X2000. The mentioned trains make a detour via Helsingborg C on the route between Lund and Hässleholm, and times for Helsingborg C in table 80 have white background, not blue. All trains use the south to east Kattarp avoiding line. Infrastructure work (quadrupling) is ongoing Lund - Malmö, and double tracking is ongoing Ängelholm - Maria (the last station before the single track tunnel from/to Helsingborg C, which both may lead to temporary rerouting.
