Poland (South East) - Lines with Obscure passenger services
Introduction
These entries are based on the timetable from 12 December 2020 to 10 December 2021. However, it should be noted it is completely reissued about four times per year with "adjustments" due on 14 March, 13 June, 29 August and 7 November 2021. In addition, there are frequent amendments within timetable periods.
Standard abbreviations are explained in General Information. Map references relate to the M.G. [Częstochowa –] Żelisławice – Włoszczowa Północ [– Warszawa]
[100/109/P200/175] (ERA-E 78C4; ERA-R 183C3; F8) PL21/103
This 7.7 km west to north link between the Częstochowa - Radom line and the CMK northwards is used by EIC Pendolinos and limited IC's running between Warszawa Zachodnia and Częstochowa Stradom.
Czarnca – Psary (p.odg. Knapówka)
[100, 109] (ERA-E 78C4; ERA-R 182C3; F8) PL21/104
This 3.8 km east - south link with the Kielce - Częstochowa line is used by services marked in table 109 with a '<' at all stations between Żelisławice and Częstochowa plus a timing at Katowice or Wroclaw.
Psary – p.odg. Starzyny – Kozłów
[100] (ERA-E 78B4-C4; ERA-R 182C3; F8) PL21/105
This north - southeast link with the Koniecpol - Kozłów line is used by all trains using the CMK between Warszawa and Krakow with a vertical bar '|' against Kozłów.
End of connections to and from the CMK
Chrusty Nowe (p.odg. Bęzelin) – Żakowice (p.odg. Pękowice)
[102, 601] (ERA-E 78B5-C5; ERA-R 177C1; F9) PL21/106
This south-to-west curve avoiding Koluszki is used by trains between Łódź and Piotrków Trybunalski/Częstochowa that do not call at Koluszki.
Częstochowa (Częstochowa Towarowa) – line 703 – podg Kucelinka – line 155 - Poraj
[102] (ERA-E 78B4; ERA-R 182B3; F7 R15) PL21/107
An alternative to the main line between Częstochowa and Poraj. Freight line 703 must be used because there is no connection at podg Kucelinka between the normal Częstochowa - Kielce passenger track [east side line 701] and Line 155 to Poraj. Lines 703 and 701 give the impression of being a grade separated junction but this is not the case as 701 on the east side is used by passenger services in both directions. Line 703 diverges at the north end of Częstochowa Towarowa (marshalling yard) to run on the far west side of the yard to Częstochowa Raków where a temporary platform was provided on the goods lines for recent use. It then climbs over the main line to Katowice to join T109 between Częstochowa Stradom and Koniecpol at podg Kucelinka where the non-passenger Line 155 to Poraj now shown as PL21/107A diverges. The route was last used in early 2020.
Częstochowa Stradom - Poraj via Częstochowa Raków and/or podg Kucelinka & line 155
[102] (ERA-E 78B4; ERA-R 182B3; F7 R15) PL21/107A
There are three possible routes between Częstochowa Stradom and Poraj. In order by known use:-
- The Częstochowa southern avoiding line to/from Kielce and from podg Kucelinka via line 155, indicated by a '<' symbol in table 102 against Częstochowa Raków and Korwinów. This route was used by one train pair in the first half of 2020.
- Line 702 forms a connection from Częstochowa Stradom to the start of line 703 [see previous entry PL21/107] with a connection to/from line 102. This was used by one train for one night in October 2020.
- Line 702 and then via all of line 703 to podg Kucelinka and line 155 to Poraj. As far as is known this combination has never been used.
[Sosnowiec Dańdówka - Sosnowiec Porąbka - line 171 -] Podg Dorota - line 171 - Dąbrowa Gornicza Wschodnia [- Sławków]
[105] (ERA-E 77B2; ERA-R 188A4-B4; R18) PL21/107B
Sosnowiec Dańdówka to podg Dorota is common with PL21/152. The Katowice - Tunel service was diverted via all as per the heading including this south to east curve of line 171 between 20 March - 6 April 2020, but nothing since. Note the route from podg Dorota to the curve towards Dąbrowa Gornicza Wschodnia is on tracks separated by width and height from line 133 in-between so travel in both directions is recommended.
Koniecpol – Kozłów (p.odg. Starzyny)
[107, 109] (ERA-E 78B4; ERA-R 182C3; F8) PL21/108
This 11 km line reopened in the 2012 timetable. Not identifiable in its own table, this is used by services in Table 109 with a timing at Częstochowa/Częstochowa Stradom and Kraków not running via Kielce. Much increased use since 2017 with the closure of Dąbrowa Górnicza Ząbkowice to Jaworzno Szczakowa.
(Kraków Batowice –) podg Kraków Przedmieśie – Line 602 – Kraków Olsza – Line 100 – Kraków Plaszów
[107, Lines 100/602] (ERA-E 78C3; ERA-R 171A5, not shown; R15) PL21/109
Enter 107 in the Search by Table section and look for trains with a < at Kraków Główny and a time at Kraków Plaszów. Used in 2019-2020 by three westbound services from Kraków Plaszów avoiding Kraków Główny but none in the 2020-2021 timetable pdfs nor is there a Peron sheet for Kraków Olsza.
Dęblin: Zajezierze k. Dęblina (p.odg. Wisła R2) – Zarzeka (p.odg. Wisła R1)
[111/550] (ERA-E 79A5; ERA-R 183C5; E10) PL21/110
This west-to-south curve avoiding Dęblin is used by direct services between Radom and Lublin which appear in table 111 with a '<' symbol against Dęblin.
(Kielce –) Sitkowka Nowiny – Busko Zdroj
[112] (ERA-E 78C3-C4; ERA-R 183A2-A3; F9/G9) PL21/111
A two pairs summer SSuO service resumed in 2018 on a 43.5km line which closed to passenger services on 10 October 2004. This became daily from 27 June 2020 and is increased again to three pairs and continues into the 2020-2021 timetable. With daily services and its own timetable, this can no longer be considered an obscure route and will be removed in December 2021.
(Tomaszów Mazowiecki – Dęba Opoczyńska –) podg. Zapowiedź – Radzice
[100, 113, 114] (ERA-E 78C5; ERA-R 183A5; E9) PL21/112
Up until 30 August 2020 the only scheduled use of this 0.7km section was by an overnight Kołobrzeg - Kraków train pair. From 13 December 2020 a regular Łódź - Radzice - Drzewica service resumed so if this continues it can no longer be considered an obscure route and will be removed in December 2021.
[Łódź –] Gałkówek – Mikołajów [– Tomaszów Mazowiecki]
[114/601] (ERA-E 78B5-C5; ERA-R 177C1; E8, R11) PL21/113
There are two possible routes between Łódź and Tomaszów Mazowiecki avoiding Koluszki - both routes are scheduled during 2020/21.
The first is a direct double track line 25 from Gałkówek via Żakowice Połudnowie to Mikołajów indicated by a '<' at Słotwiny and used by more frequent express services or
single track Line 537 via Słotwiny, podg Zielen and Żakowice Połudnowie indicated by calls at Słotwiny in the 114 PDF. Note Interrail and PR Regional tickets are not valid on local ŁKA trains and Gałkówek to podg Zielen is common with part of PL21/603.
Note no Żakowice Połudnowie station listing appears in the PDF for table 114 or 601. Additional confirmation of use of the alternative via line 537 would be obtained via that station's departure sheet.
Skarżysko Kamienna avoiding line: Lipowe Pole (p.odg. SKA) – SKB – Skarżysko Kościelne (p.odg. SKE)
[115] (ERA-E 78C4; ERA-R 183A4; F9) PL21/114
This route (line 566), ca 5 km long, provides a direct connection between the Radom and Sandomierz lines and is indicated in Table 115 by a < marker against Skarżysko Kamienna. In the 2020-2021 timetable period there are two southbound TLK services leaving Radom at 08:15 and 19:15/19:21 and two northbound services leaving Skarżysko Kościelne at 07:50/07:58 and 17:56/17:57.
Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski – Sandomierz – Grębów
[115] (ERA-E 79A3-A4; ERA-R 183B5-C3; F10-G10) PL21/115
Used by services from Skarzysko Kamienna and PL21/114, plus Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski to Sandomierz by a dated weekend-only pair of locals. Also note Sandomierz – Grębów is covered by those listed in PL21/116.
Sandomierz – Sobów (– Tarnobrzeg)
[116/126] (ERA-E 79A3; ERA-R 183C3; G10) PL21/116
A limited service was re-introduced in summer 2017. They may be identified in timetable 126 by extended journey times between Sobów and Grębów - +30 minutes instead of 7 minutes.

Przeworsk avoiding line: Przeworsk Gorliczyna – podg Przeworsk Zachodnia
[116, 121] (ERA-E 79B3; ERA-R 184A1; G11), PL21/117
This curve enables trains between Stalowa Wola and Rzeszow to avoid reversing at Przeworsk. All year use as indicated by no timing at Przeworsk in timetables 116 and 121. In 2020-2021 three trains each way use the curve.
Kraków northern loop line: (Kraków Główny –) Kraków Batowice – podg Dłubnia – Kraków Nowa Huta – Podłęże
[120] (ERA-E 78B2-B3; ERA-R 171B5; R15) PL21/118
Diversions via long distance services continue throughout the 2020-2021 TT period. Table 120 now shows the local services calling at reopened (from 15 March 2020) stations Lubocza & Kraków Nowa Huta, so identification of diverted services is now very straightforward with a | through Nowa Huta and "<" markers between Kraków Główny and Podłęże. Reports of the location of Nowa Huta station would be appreciated to confirm if it is the old PKP platforms on loops on the north side, or further east as used by the previous years unadvertised workers services nearer the huge steel works entrance.
To/from the east end of Kraków Nowa Huta the longer north side line outside the elevated freight only balloon loop is the usual route in both directions but it has been known for services to take a shorter inside curve to/from podg Koscielniki, especially eastbound if schedules show paths crossing in this area. Note both are line 95 as shown more clearly on Open Railway Map than the Mały Atlas Kraków insert. Eastbound services may also use a significantly separate route involving a flyover approaching Podłęże and in late 2020 this was the only route available so any reports of what route is taken at Kraków Nowa Huta, and approaching Podłęże would be appreciated by the Compilers.
Kraków northern loop line: (Miechów –) podg Raciborowice - podg Dłubnia - podg Rudzice - Kraków Nowa Huta
[107/120] (ERA-E 78C3; ERA-R 171B5; R15) PL21/118A
This curve giving access to Nowa Huta from the north was used for diversions for a period in 2018. From 12 December 2020 a daily international service uses this curve as well as PL21/118b.
407/14010 | Warszawa Wschodnia - 21:32/21:49 Miechów - Wien Hbf |
Kraków northern loop line: Kraków Nowa Huta – podg Podgrabie - podg Rudzice [- Kraków-Płaszów]
[107/120] (ERA-E 78C2; ERA-R 171B5; R15) PL21/118B
Believed to be the first known passenger use of this curve since clockwise steam specials to/from Kraków Glówny that ran in the Summer of 2008 & 2009. Daily services over this curve by an international train commenced at the start of the 2020-2021 timetable period and the same services use PL21/118a. Note this curve is grade separated from end to end.
407/14010 | Warszawa Wschodnia - 21:32/21:49 Miechów - Wien Hbf |
Kraków Główny avoider via Kraków Olsza
[120/140] (ERA-E 78C3; ERA-R 182; R15) PL21/119
No use in the 2020-2021 timetable, confirmed by the absence of a Peron sheet. For part of 2020 there had been limited locals terminating at Olsza from the east plus four westbound InterCity services in the summer timetable.
(Przemyśl Główny –) Hurko – Medyka (– Mostys'ka 2)
[122] (ERA-E 79B2; ERA-R 184B1; H12, R35) PL21/120
There are three routes between these points; from south to north they are:
- Line 91, a cross border 1435 mm gauge line which ends east of Mostys'ka 1 in Ukraine.
This is used between Przemyśl Główny and Medyka by the PKP local service shown in Table 122 and usually by the through Wroclaw - L'viv service, plus LEO Express have applied to run through to Mostys'ka 2.
- Line 989, a 1435 mm gauge line through the marshalling yards, re-joining Line 91 at Medyka.
No passenger services use this line. Note that page H12 of the "Atlas Linii Kolejowych Polski" is incorrect in showing passenger stations on this line; they are on Line 91 and the enlarged page R35 shows the situation correctly.
- Line 92, the 1520 mm gauge line into Ukraine.
This route is used by the daytime services between Kyiv/L'viv and Przemyśl Główny, and from 2017/18 the night service to/from Odessa, all operated by Ukrainian railways. Note such trains terminating at Przemyśl Główny are no longer shown in PKP 122 so are listed below.
Up until the 2016/17 TT change it was believed Lines 91 and 92 were used on alternate days by the overnight L'viv/Lvov services, with either a manual gauge change at Przemyśl (with a longer stop) or an SUW2000 gauge change at Mostys'ka 2 (with a relatively short stop at Przemyśl). The gauge changer at Mostys'ka 2 was noted out of use as at October 2017 but an April 2018 traveller confirms his overnight L'viv/Lvov services used Line 91 and the Mostys'ka 2 gauge changer.
The 2020 Przemyśl Główny Peron sheets showed a Standard gauge platform was used in both directions by the overnight through service which of course does not preclude use of the gauge changer at Przemyśl so further reports would be appreciated by the Compilers although the Beta version of the PKP Journey planner route map clearly shows the 2019/20 services booked via Line 91.

[122] (ERA-E 79B2; ERA-R 184B1; H12, R35) PL21/121
No planned use indicated in 2020-2021 after diversions between 19-26 May 2019
Stalowa Wola Rozwadów Towarowy – Stalowa Wola Charzewice - Pilchów
[126, 555] (ERA-E 79A3-B3; ERA-R 183C3; G11) PL21/122
No service in the 2020-2021 timetable pdfs as a consequence of electric services commencing from 13 December 2020. This curve (line 565) was previously used by services between Lublin and Tarnobrzeg (- Rzeszow) with a '<' symbol against Stalowa Wola Rozwadów in 126 and 555. These now either reverse at, or call and continue beyond Stalowa Wola Rozwadów.
Stróże avoiding line: SR4 – SR3
[130, 131] (ERA-E 79A2; ERA-R 79A2; H9) PL21/123
Use resumed 1 October 2017. In 2020-2021 three dated train pairs Tarnów <=> Jasło use the curve and can readily identified in tables 130 and 131 by < markers at Stróże.
Stróże Station – SR3 [East Junction]
[131] (ERA-E 79A2; ERA-R 186B5; H9) PL21/124
Just one heavily dated train pair Fridays and Sundays in 2020-2021. Dates have proved subject to change in the past and confirmation that the train runs should be sought before travelling.

Stróże SR3 [East Junction] – Gorlice Zagorzany (– Jasło)
[131] (ERA-E 79A2; ERA-R 186B5; H9 - H10) PL21/125
Used by services listed in PL21/123 and PL21/124.
(Jasło –) Gorlice-Zagórzany – Gorlice
[131/a] (ERA-E 79A2; ERA-R 186B5; H10) PL21/126
Jasło - Gorlice-Zagórzany - Gorlice services in 2020-2021 are again listed in table 131 rather than separate table 131a making it harder to see its complicated operating pattern.
Zagórz – Komańcza – Łupków - Medzilaborce [ZSR]
[131/134] (ERA-E 79B1-B2; ERA-R 186C4; 187A5, H11) PL21/127
A limited Bank Holiday and summer weekends service resumed from Zagórz to Łupków on 11 June 2016. From Summer 2017 some were extended across the border to Medzilaborce in Slovakia and this continues in 2020-2021. The summer 2021 timetable is in TT134. There is one SO Poznań - Łupków which returns on Sunday, and two Zagórz - Medzilaborce train pairs at weekends, including Fridays.
Nowy Zagórz - Zagórz R101 - Uherce - Zagórz R101 - Zagórz
[131] (ERA-E 79B2; ERA-R 187A5; H11) PL21/127B
This is a reopened 17km section of the Sanok - Krościenko - Khyriv (UZ) railway. It is accessed by a triangle north of Zagórz. A summer Saturday Kraków Główny - Sanok - Zagórz - Łupków service runs from Sanok to Uherce, reverses, and returns via the east to south side of the triangle to Zagórz before continuing to Łupków. The return service on the Sunday takes this route in reverse.

Rzeszów Zachodni - Rzeszów Staroniwa (Rzeszów Głowny avoider) - line 611
[132] (ERA-E 79A2-B2; ERA-R 183C1; G11) PL21/128
This curve was used between 25 June - 31 August 2019 by local services and until 14 December 2019 by a TLK train pair to/from Żagorz operated by SKPL due to major Rzeszów Główny station reconstruction works. There have been no passenger trains over the curve since.
Sucha Beskidzka
[135] (ERA-E 78B2; ERA-R 185B5; G8) PL21/129
All services between Kraków and Zakopane had to reverse at Sucha Beskidzka until an avoiding curve opened on 11 June 2017. Since then most Zakopane trains run via the avoiding line, calling at a new station of Sucha Beskidzka Zamek. Use of the North to West and South to West curves can be identified by any train calling at Sucha Beskidzka.
Kraków Plaszów – Kraków Bonarka (– Skawina)
[135a] (ERA-E 78C2; ERA-R 182; R15) PL21/130
Running via this route was much reduced once the Kraków Plaszów avoiding curve opened in December 2017. All local services between Kraków Plaszow and Skawina were operated by buses in 2019/20 until 8 November 2020 when several local services reverted to trains. The December 2020 timetable change reverted all services back to buses until at least 13 March 2021.
Oświęcim – Skawina
[141] (ERA-E 78B2-C2; ERA-R 182B1-C1; G7-G8) PL21/131
The Praha - Kraków was rerouted via table 140 in 2019/20 but is not running in 2020-2021 due to Covid restrictions. In summer 2020 trains ran the full length of the line and this use continues in 2020-2021. From 1 May 2021 to 26 September 2021 there are morning PR trains from Katowice and Kraków to Zator which return in the early evening, so complete travel over the line in daylight is possible, but with a very long layover. From 30 August 2020 two overnight trains travel the majority of the route. See PL21/132 for use from the Oświęcim avoiding curve junction.

There are three routes between Kędzierzyn-Koźle and podg. Stare Koźle. From east to west they are:
1. Line 709. This is the normal passenger route but is not in use until at least 13 March 2021 due to engineering works. This 4 km single track goes over the avoiding curve line 681 via a staff halt at the PKP depot to/from Peron (platform) I. It did go out of use for a time but resumed as the normal for PR local trains with the June 2016 timetable change but see 2. & 3. for exceptions.
2. Line 151 (northbound). From a travellers July 2017 observation, only the equivalent of the IC below normally uses a line initially heading east at podg. Stare Koźle [not shown in the Mały Atlas but in OpenRailwayMap], then underneath Lines 709 and 681 to run parallel to, but up to 30m apart of the southbound track of Line 151. Both tracks of 151 remain on the west side of the substantial yard and lead to/from only Kędzierzyn-Koźle Peron IV, with IC4124 reversing to head towards Gliwice. From a August 2020 report and confirmed in the Peron sheets, the service listed below plus all IC/TLK's and locals from the south are booked into Peron IV due to closure of Peron I and II for engineering work and use this alternative route until at 13 March 2021.
3. Line 151 (southbound). This runs on the west side of the yard (Kędzierzyn-Koźle KKD) up to 0.5 km away from Line 709 and the southern junction at podg. Stare Koźle which is grade separated. Any service from Kędzierzyn-Koźle Peron IV towards Rybnik or Racibórz must use this route.
Check the Kędzierzyn-Koźle arrivals sheet for the latest information on all three variants.

In addition to the services listed below, from 7 November 2020 to 13 March 2021 ALL Raciborz <=> Kędzierzyn-Koźle local services are diverted via this curve to reverse and call at Sławięcice on the line towards Gliwice.
Use increased during 2020/21 by diversions due to engineering work on 147 near Czechowice Dziedzice. Note that the Nice Ville <=> Moskva Belorusskaia train pair are an RZD service with special ticketing arrangements. Also check before travelling as they are regularly diverted and are believed suspended until further notice.

[160/220] (ERA-E 78A3, not shown; ERA-R 181C2; R14) PL21/143A
The following TLK services do not call, but use the goods lines parallel to the platforms at Kędzierzyn-Koźle, stopping at Kędzierzyn-Koźle Azoty instead. As a consequence [and the journey planner map view confirms], they must use goods line 680 north of the station. The map view shows all trains taking the southbound option of this grade separated line so any reports of the actual route taken would be appreciated by the Compilers.

Lisów – podg Liswarta - Herby Nowe
[175/180] (ERA-E 78B4; ERA-R 182A3; F7) PL21/149B
A press article indicated diversions via this west to north curve in 2019-2020 due to track works but searches showed just one train affected. That was not shown in either PDF but was confirmed by the Journey Planner and its map view. As far as is known this curve was only in passenger use from 14 June to 29 July 2020, after which this one service ran via Herby Stare to reverse. There appears to be no use of this curve in 2020-2021.
Obscure services: Lines used on an occasional basis
(Zawiercie –) Łazy – Line 160 south, 186 north – Dąbrowa Gornicza Ząbkowice
[101/102] (ERA-E 77B2-C2; ERA-R 188A5-B5; too detailed to be shown correctly, G7 R18) PL21/150
An alternative route previously identified by < markers between Łazy and Dąbrowa Górnicza Sikorka. Previous southbound use was scheduled during 2016, northbound on 11 August 2017 with northbound mainline services continuing on the goods lines north of Łazy on the east side of the first, then in-between parts of two freight yards to Zawiercie. Used between August and December 2020 by a number of services and it is believed all northbound services rejoined the normal route by at least Łazy.
There is no use of the full route evident from the 2020-2021 timetable pdfs.
Hovever in Autumn 2020 travellers noticed new platforms have been built on line 186 at Chruszczobród and Wiesiółka so use of only 186 by local services can now be confirmed from the Peron sheets. Look for trains booked to call at Chruszczobród Peron II and Wiesiółka Peron III. Also note if a southbound service calls at Wiesiółka that it is impossible to also use line 160. There are 12 local services using this route in 2020-21, three northbound and 9 southbound.

PR Łódź sponsored the first passenger service on this branch since 1988 for summer 2014 but from 2017 services ran only on "Harvest" weekend which in 2019 was three pairs on 14/15 September. So it was a surprise when 2020 details were announced of a pair of DMU trains on Saturdays and Sundays from 8th - 30th August and that tickets appear to be free if you apply through the email address quoted in this PolRegio link. As timings were not in the Journey Planner they were Łódź Kaliska 08:12 Spała 09:25 to 17:10 Łódź Kaliska 18:27. No information yet available for the 2020-2021 timetable period.
