This west to north curve provides a connection between the main line from Koblenz via Bingen and the Mainzer Kaiserbrücke over the Rhein between Mainz and Wiesbaden. It is used by some overnight trains, also via Abzw Kostheim and Mainz-Bischofsheim, to avoid Mainz Hbf.

Various trains to/from Ludwigshafen operate to/from the BASF chemical works. There are three halts, Süd, Mitte and Nord, within the BASF works. Use of the trains is officially restricted to those with works passes. Smoking and photography are strictly forbidden within the works.
Journey time between Ludwigshafen (Rhein) Hbf and Ludwigshafen BASF Nord is 11 or 12 minutes.
Although the service is not advertised to the general public, most trains to and from BASF can be identified in the Kursbuch by 'Lu’hafen BASF' being shown as the destination or origin of trains at the bottom or top of the timing column. This curve, via the low level west side platforms 6 to 9 at Ludwigshafen (Rhein) Hbf, is used by through trains between the Frankenthal and Schifferstadt lines. There is a service between Mainz and Karlsruhe via Germersheim every two hours, less frequently at weekends.
