There has been an aspiration for many years to construct a railway linking Kosovo with the Albanian port of Durrës. The latest incarnation of this proposal is for the construction of a new line between Shkodër in Albania and the area of Gjakova on the Prizren branch in Kosovo, thereby creating a route linking a new port at Durrës / Porto Romano and a “Dry Port” in Prishtinë. Feasibility studies are currently underway.

With plans being developed in the early 2020s to relocate the port of Durrës to Porto Romano, the idea of a rail connected "Dry Port" in Prishtinë also emerged. More detailed studies are now planned.
